Michael Charles Welch, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away on Friday, November 17th, 2017, after battling cancer for the last two years. He was 62.
Michael was born on June 15th, 1955, in Shinglehouse, PA. He grew up playing baseball with his brother and performing music with his friends. He spent about a decade in Rochester, NY where his 3 daughters were born before moving to Bradford, PA, where he worked as a car salesman and met Cheryl, his wife of 20 years. In his search for a warmer climate to play golf year-round, Michael and Cheryl moved to Spartanburg, SC in 2008. He continued to sell cars and play golf until his cancer diagnosis in early 2016.
Michael was passionate about golf, enjoyed a good steak, appreciated a great song, and adored every dog he ever met. He was a songwriter and a story teller who possessed a great sense of humor. He loved his wife, his children, and his dogs with his whole heart.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Welch of Spartanburg. SC; daughters, Shannon of Covina, CA, Carrie and Amanda Welch of Rochester, NY; stepdaughter, Lea (Steve) Quattrini of Charleston, SC; stepson, Bobby Von Bergen of Buffalo, NY; four grandchildren, Courtney and Mason Tingley, Tyler and Nicholas Von Bergen; mother, Marjorie (McGuirl) Welch of Shinglehouse, PA; brother, Timothy (Susan) Welch of Stafford, NY; sister, Patricia (Michael) Bryant of Olean, NY; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert “Skip” Welch of Shinglehouse, PA.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Michael would have preferred friends and family to donate to the American Cancer Society, support an animal shelter, enjoy a round of golf, or head to Johnson Valley in February for King of The Hammers.
